San Francisco left field techno producer Amber Cox has released her new EP Grimm Tales, her first for Berlin label Occultists. It contains three original cuts and a remix of the title track by Occultists’ owner James Demon. As the name suggests, its a dark affair with each track imbued in a musical sense, with its own separate thematic disposition but taken together there is a definite fear and foreboding present in all three. The darkened ambience of the title track builds delicate atmospherics around a slow propulsive arpeggiated rhythm. It’s ghostly “Warehouse” remix by Demon does similar but brings a strong techno flavour to the track. And through the use of the spindly percussion and substantive kick, a cavernous sense of space opens up that Demon intentionally never quite fills creating a further sense of unease.
The rhythmic and minimalist techno cut ‘Invisible Wall’ utilises a pacy rhythmic mixture of electronic and traditional drums with vapour like effects and drifting vocal samples. These elements are underscored by the scant low end where the light application of bass synth serves to internalise rather then envelop. This, given the track’s title, is perhaps suggestive of Cox’s intention to reflect the inner roadblocks we create in our own mind. The dark electronica of ‘Over The Oceans’ is a very different beast to its more introverted forerunner. Its laconic beat belies the drama that ends up surrounding it as walls of icy synth cascade down and oscillate across proceedings creating a sense of heightened tension.
Although her first EP for Occultists, Grimm Tales is Cox’s seventh solo EP release since 2012. She also forms one half of the dark Tech-House dup Slumber with Öona Dahl.
