V DROPS THE DARKWAVE INSPIRED SO PURE

Melbourne based darkwave artist V has released her long awaited second record So Pure, a full seven years after delivering her self titled debut way back in 2012. A project born a decade ago in the now defunct Berlin-Mitte squat of Tacheles, her experiences as a multi-disciplinary artist as part of the underground across Europe and as a member of two bands, queer 80s synthwave outfit Dark Water in which she plays drums and as the bassist in the industrial Trans-Tasman collaboration Permission have certainly informed So Pure’s dark intensity.

But if these experiences provide the sonic background and basis for So Pure, its immediate context centres directly on the very personal process of coping with the loss of a significant other andwhen deep human connection is severed, trying to make sense of existence in the face of overwhelming grief. As a result, there are twin forces at play on the album, an immense emotional warmth that is tempered with a distinct wariness and distance. The at times almost apocalyptic emotional intensity is represented by an array of scintillating melodies that are layered to mirror the deep but at times angst ridden lyrical disposition that is more often than not laid bare without reservation. But there is an uncertainty that abounds too, represented by the album’s shadowy gothic like tendencies which are accompanied by calculatingly cold and unforgiving motorik inspired beats.

Those dual tendencies can be seen in the two singles chosen in the lead up to So Pure’s release. The first is the arpeggio heavy acid tinged title track where its insistent almost pleading like vocals are tempered by its spartan beat. The second single is the eminently danceable yet dark, foreboding and drum fill heavy ‘Not Ready For This’ which is accompanied by an “in yer face” yet poignant video which sees toughness matched with tenderness and anger tempered by love. You can also check the immensity of for us album standout ‘Blood’, currently featured in our Postpunk / Darkwave / Coldwave playlist here.
