It’s always a good day when Italian Luigi Tozzi releases new material. It’s even better when he appears on two EP’s in one day. His solo release sees him return after a two year interval to Swedish label Hypnus with Wastelands, a minimal and deep techno four tracker that will satiate the sonic appetite and spark the interstellar imaginations of even the most discerning of listeners. The title track kicks things off in insistent fashion, its stringent thump and percussive precision working themselves into a rhythmic lather that’s overlaid with insertions of bladed steel and pressure valve atmospherics. The acid tinged ‘Raiders’ follows, rhythmically compact and subtle in its pensive propulsion.
‘Dune’s’ tense palpitating beats and strange and abrasive sounds belie its feel of desolation but give rise to its disquiet. The exacting and quietly intense groove of ‘Scurrier’ is immediately set against a suite of cold and uneasy lo-hi effects and oscillating frequencies. That they seem to lunge out from nowhere gives further rise to the sense of alienation and foreboding which slowly reveals itself across the record. Tozzi’s depth of sonic perception together with his sensitive and painstaking approach to the smallest of details renders Wastelands an EP as immersive and it is expeditious. Highly recommended.
Wastelands is available to stream below while the digital and vinyl is available here.
Tozzi also contributes the rhythmically engaged yet sauntered pace of ‘Oplite’ the third on the 4 track compilation Wiring Harness he shares with German duo Cassegrain and Belgian Hungarian producers Altinbas and Atis respectively. It’s the second of four EP’s set for release to coincide with the fifth anniversary of Belgium’s Voltage Festival. Listen to Tozzi’s track below and buy here.
