ROSIE CARNEY (ENG/IRE) – BARE

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

“Tell me that you’ve seen this place
And that I don’t have to be brave
Please just say
I’m only human too.
I’m only human too.
And that’s what human’s do.
When they don’t have a clue.”
Rosie Carney – Humans.

“I’m sorry for the things that I
can’t do for you
But in the morning I will write
another song for you.”
Rosie Carney – Orchid.

“I am hunted by misfortune
And by a dog without a home
Don’t believe in my distortion
Or I will always be alone…

I will always be alone.”
Rosie Carney – 7.

MINI-REVIEW

“Bare has been many years in the making and the finished results are telling on multiple levels. These eleven tracks demonstrate that Rosie Carney, despite her youth (or because of what’s been packed into it) knows full well artistically and intellectually as well as personally and emotionally that it is time and space that is ever the healer. That it is only time and space that can provide the profound answers we seek in overcoming personal traumas and realising that our outward fragility is as normal as our ever present inner strength – as much as it can seem distant and absent at times. That vulnerability and being comfortable in our own skin are not mutually exclusive.

There is pain on display here but it comes with a self-discovery and sense of cathartic closure. More often than not, light shines through Carney’s carefully downplayed notes and hauntingly beautiful chord structures. In her overtly optimistic yet explorative and wise songwriting narratives, its rays of hope which are emitted through the gloom. And it is in her significant vocal abilities, delicately delivered and expertly arranged, that we find Carney able to both metaphorically and literally convey a laid bare and instructive honesty, one that enables a sense of humility to positively glisten long in its lingering glow. More than worth the wait, Bare is one of the best debut albums for many a year.”
