Canny Melbourne pop quartet Totally Mild released their debut full length, Down Time, in Australia back in April on the erstwhile Bedroom Suck Records and last week scored the album an international release through Fire Records. We missed the initial release here so the second release is most welcome. It’s kinda what happens when you don’t have your ear to the ground at home. Understated is often a word overused in the independent music sphere but in the case of the Elizabeth Mitchell fronted band, their name, the name of their album and their slow dance type approach to their brand of pop just oozes the term. But don’t be fooled by such superficiality as musically, Totally Mild’s carefully constructed melodies and deliberative timing structures possess great songwriting depth and align perfectly with Mitchell’s emotive and bittersweet lyrics. And if you haven’t caught up with Totally Mild to this point, check out the self effacing excellence of three tracks below, the upbeat sparkle that characterises the single ‘Move On’, along with the celestially glacial, ‘Christa’ and the gentle mantra of ‘Always Around’.
