Melbourne quartet Gold Class released their impressive debut album It’s You last week and with ‘Life as A Gun’ currently sitting in our Top 10, their new single, ‘Furlong’ dropped to coincide with the album’s release. Formed in mid 2014 by guitarist Evan Purdey’s enlisting of drummer Mark Hewitt, vocalist James Purdey and bassist Jon Snub, they released first single, ‘Michael’ at this time last year. Gold Class musically meld together classic 80s elements including emotive delay drenched reverb, and elastic bass lines ensconced within a spiky minimalist post punk and disciplined pop framework with hard hitting lyrics delivered in style through Curley’s deep vibrato vocals, garnering the inevitable Morrissey comparisons. While the album can be accused of veering a little close to its influences at times, its a promising debut with enough originality to definitely keep interest throughout. It’s You is out now digitally now here through Spunk in Australia and Felte in the US and Europe with the vinyl edition to follow in the next few months. Listen to ‘Furlong’ below.
