In the middle of last month, one of the best Australian independent labels Bedroom Suck Records, reissued Illywhacka on vinyl, one of the best under the radar records of 2015 by idiosyncratic Sydney genre defying story tellers You Beauty. While we featured the insanely infectious title track at #17 in our Top 100 tracks of 2015, as far as the album was concerned we decided to hold off when we heard the news and await the vinyl release. Indeed, I refused to listen to it in its entirety until I could rest that needle on wax.
Originally self released digitally on their Rice Is Nice label back in October, Illywhacka is at once a tongue in cheek and self effacing yet defiant and personal ode to the dreams, complexities and pitfalls of internet dating in ‘ostraya’ (Australia – ed.). And the magic of the cultural mores is in their subtle delivery, for they could of overwhelmed the album, but don’t. Musically, the band effortlessly whip up morsels of shimmering jangle pop, bass heavy angular post punk, surf rock and even rock opera in places, the latter unsurprising given the concept nature of the record. With so much going on, its a wonder how cohesive the record is, but the mark of great songwriting ability is a knowledge of how to use just the right amount of appropriate firepower in the armoury.
