To celebrate this week’s much belated Indie30 album of the week gong for Pool from Aaron Maine’s Portland outfit Porches, we’ve collected the excellent offerings from it from various media. Released back in early February, it boasts, in its own subtle way, Maine’s self effacing emotive vocals aided by Greta Kline, soft neon synths layered and arranged in confounding ways, doses of jangly guitar, winding balearic like bass lines and crisp precision beats, all the while maintaining a strange melancholic invitation to partake in its introspective nature. Very much a departure from Maine’s previous acoustic offerings, on the surface it seems rather simple in its electronic form but repeated listens reveal a dichotomous album of great pop complexity. ‘Be Apart’ has been sitting in our Top 30 since our 2016 charts began in mid February and you’ve heard nothing else from Pool, sample lead single ‘Hour’ and its video from last year and the recent single ‘Car’ complete with a London live performance from November last year. Grab Pool on vinyl HERE and digitally on Bandcamp. You’ll be glad you did.
