We completely missed Allene Norton’s sensational second album as Cellars last year, ‘Lovesick’ and we’re bloody right annoyed that we did. In fact, until last week, we’d never heard of her. To rectify that, we’ll be all over her forthcoming follow up, Phases, produced by none other than Ariel Pink. An immediate evolution in sound can be detected as Lovesick was a rather slick and bright affair with meticulous attention to detail which was totally done from performance to production by Norton herself. That’s not to say that aspects of Lovesick don’t have a lo-fi approach, witness, ‘Extortion of a Girl’. The two tracks that have appeared thus far from Phases, ‘Nighttime Girl (now in our Top 30 chart) and ‘Still In Love’ are a little less glossy, more analog like in sound and have Pink’s prints all over them. Phases is out April 15. Highly recommended. Listen to the slow burning ‘Still In Love’ below. Incidentally if you missed Lovesick too get it from her bandcamp HERE.
