“We normally think of ‘technology’ and ‘organic’ as two separate things, but computers are made of crystals and metals and magnets from the earth. That idea is interesting to me.” Logan Takahashi.
Next week sees the release of NoGeo, the excellent debut solo album from experimental electronic music producer and one half of Teengirl Fantasy Logan Takahashi. It’s a relentlessly restless affair built on the use of an Elekton monomachine that draws on late 80s Japanese Neo Geo to early 00’s Brooklyn table top electronics. Melodies bubble about, inserting themselves almost as passing silhouettes that constantly rise and fall, inserting, replacing and then reinserting themselves like mathematical algorithms.
The lead single, ‘Rekr’ rests on a familiar melody that Takahashi builds organic effects and rhythms around with degrees of swirling intensity. Listen below for that as well as the urgent ‘Cella’.
NoGeo is out on April 15 through Ghostly International. Pre-oder on all formats including coloured vinyl here. Intelligent, accessible and highly recommended.
