Like a guitar refrain echoing out from just before the turn of the century, LVL UP, with their beginnings firmly rooted in the liberal publicly funded art spaces of the Purchase campus of the State University of New York, clearly wear their influences on their collective sleeves. The quartet’s ear for generating multiple melodies, alternating their sound levels, achieving spatial distance between the sum of their parts and invoking inverse rhythms, all 90s staples, come through strongly on ‘Pain’, the first single from their upcoming third album, Return to Love. It’s a song essential in two parts, the first is the propulsive track proper, the second the spiralling duality of Mike Caridi and Dave Benton’s guitar work.
