COOL SOUNDS AND DANCE MOVES

COOL SOUNDS AND DANCE MOVES

Back in June, Melbourne’s Cool Sounds released their debut album, Dance Moves, a gorgeous, cohesive blueprint of enveloping pop. Much to our disappointment we missed it at time of release and have only now digested its unassuming majesty in full. And wow, what a satisfying ride. So much so, its this week’s AOTW. Every track is a winner boasting as each does carefully constructed rhythmic centres rounded out by a mixture of guitar, synth and horn. The straddling of the line between jangle and post new wave synth pop with lounge jazz stylings is adeptly handled. Many have failed to hit the mark with such lofty ambitions but for Cool Sounds, as their name suggests, it’s a walk in the park. The band is led by Dainis Lacey and enlists The Ocean Party stalwarts Zach Denton on keys and Liam Halliwell on sax and the ultra-pivotal Nick Kearton on bass. Listen to the first four tracks of the record below, the half urgent hook filled opener, ‘Control’ and sun soaked precision of ‘Shake’ and the videos for the gazey croon of  ‘In Blue Skies’ and the synth/sax interplay of ‘Runs Wild’. Dance Moves is out on vinyl on Deaf Ambitions HERE.
