Earlier this month Stockholm house producer Mr Tophat combined with the legendary Robyn to release his new EP, Trust Me, a sprawling three track gem of entrancing and divergent deep disco and house in which all tracks are timed around and over the ten minute mark. Robyn’s contribution is an example minimalist perfection where she is neither at the forefront nor is she anonymous in the mix. Adding to its live disposition, The Junkyard Connections and Karlovak owner also enlisted the Lindvall brothers, Per and David on drums and bass respectively, the former being ABBA’s original beat maker. It’s a perfect way to begin our posting year, an EP that both suits the small hours’ peak time and its come down.
Both love of the disco base and the EP’s the generous helpings of house inspired sounds comes clearly through in their own words;
“House music is something I’ve been listening to since I was 14. The house songs I like most is house that’s clearly sample-based in disco. That’s the house music that’s really attracted me. For me, it came really natural to discover what’s behind these samples.” Mr Tophat.
“You can hear disco in all club music. It’s the base of so much music that we listen to, and it’s one of the most influential music styles ever. You can hear it everywhere. Disco’s always been in my world.” Robyn.
