AOTW: ALDOUS HARDING’S PARTY

AOTW: ALDOUS HARDING’S PARTY

“Here is your princess and here is your horizon”. Aldous Harding – Horizon.

New Zealand artist Aldous Harding’s second album Party, is this week’s Indie30 album of the week. Dramatic as it is euphoric, it is slow in consideration and delivery, deliberative in its essence and ultimately a work that shares both the light and the darkness. Harding is at once brutally honest and upfront about many facets of life as she sees them. Topics of love and heartbreak, losing yourself and riding out the inevitable painful ending mix with observations on addiction and and musings on the basics of ambition. But at the same time, there is withdrawal and a celebration of aloneness and its attractions that characterises the record more so. The sparse and affective instrumentation sits well alongside Harding’s chameleon like vocals giving those who dive into the inner world of Party a multi-faceted sensory ride that won’t easily be achieved by those unwilling to go there. Both videos for the album’s two singles, the pensive and determined ‘Imaging My Man’ and the ode to art over other ‘Horizon’ are below.

Party was released last week on 4AD. Buy it on vinyl here.
