Toronto based collective Broken Social Scene released their first record in seven years last week. Titled Hug Of Thunder its an expansive ride boasting contributions from all 15 original members and positively teems, as with all their albums, with a vast array of distinct progressive musical ideas and idiosyncratic techniques based within an undoubted pop context. The songwriting directions it forges are as mathematical as they are emotive and across its 12 tracks their usual infectious hooks and melodies and thrillingly ambitious experimentation await in equal measure.
