Melbourne electronic outfit Black Cab dropped a brand new soundtrack album today in the form of (Akira). I must admit, we’ve been asleep at the wheel in 2017 round here when it comes to this criminally underrated band and had no idea this was even coming. We even missed the epic Empire States EP released back in April. (Akira) was inspired by a singular concept and this time they have classic Japanese sci-fi anime in the frame. Its dark and deep electronic sound is marked by intense, pulsating, hypnotic synths and huge crashing taiko drums fitting the theme hand in glove.

Listen to the soundtrack’s bookends below and grab a copy digitally here. We’ve also included the recently released video for the aforementioned ‘Empire States’ which takes in a plethora of moving images depicting the United States . Look out for that to take a belated place in our Top 30 next week. Black Cab launch Akira tonight in Brisbane at the Gallery of Modern Art for QAGOMA’s ‘Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe’ exhibition and play Melbourne and Sydney over the next few weeks.
