Melbourne via Bendigo quintet DARTS have simultaneously released two brand new singles. It’s their first lot of new material since their 2015 debut album Below Empty And Westward Bound. The new tracks reflect a democratisation of sorts in composition in the sense that guitarist/vocalist Ally Campbell Smith is now sharing the songwriting with her counterpart Angus Ayres. While their very different vocal approaches were present on the album, which in itself was a diverse affair, there is even more nuance on offer across the board here. Soft undertones sit perfectly underneath the frenetic tension generated by the rhythmically powerful ‘Cinder Bloc’ while the incessant energy of ‘Distance = Infinity’ sees relentless guitar and stick work and Ayres abrasive yet earnest vocals tempered and complemented by affecting harmonies and the subtle employment of synth laden atmospherics. Listen to both tracks below and get them here and here on Rice Is Nice.
