Emily Underhill, the London based artist behind TUSKS released her debut album, Dissolve last week. A delicate yet at times weighty affair, especially lyrically, it oscillates in influences from the melancholic, space laden, minimalistic tones and off kilter beats of electronic opener ‘For You’ to more traditional singer-songwriter structures like ‘Ivy’ and ‘My Love’. Whichever direction she takes, there is widescreen like expanse at every turn and her penchant for layering varied atmospherics through the use of distinct electronic aspects with long time producer and collaborator Brett Cox provides extra dimensions. Whether it be employing sleight of hand downtempo electronica or reflective post rock like elements, the diversity of Dissolve should not be surprising given the album was two long years in the making and visual influences are as important to her songwriting as aural ones.

The three singles shared across the year in the lead up to the album’s release are no exception and further illustrate the diversity on offer in spades. ‘Last’ delivers that aforementioned post rock feel laying the smack down on an unfulfilling ex-lover while ‘Dissolve’ is a dissonant ballad of deep existential proportion. If you haven’t caught up with Underhill’s creations those two tracks as well as the tense and dramatic  ‘Toronto’ are below. Dissolve is available through One Little Indian physically here. TUSKS plays Iceland Airwaves November 1.
