OKLOU UNVEILS WONDROUS EP, THE RITE OF MAY

Yesterday London based French artist and producer Marylou Mayniel, aka Oklou, released her diverse and affecting new EP, The Rite of May. January and February saw the member of Parisian All Female DJ/Radio collective TGAF* (These Gyals Are On Fiyah) release two high calibre singles from it in the lead up, the drama filled ‘Friendless’ and the club ready ‘They Can’t Hear Me’. We’re more than pleased then that the other two tracks and the two parted ‘Valley’ are in the same class. Today we share one of them, the delicate, poignant and slow burning ‘Samuel’.

Like on ‘Friendless’ you might think there’s a guest vocalist at work but both voices are Mayniel’s and she intertwines the natural with the heavily processed beautifully. That combination is applied deftly to every musical element and along with the use of space captures the essence of the record perfectly. It is also a reflection of both her classical music background and latent electronic proficiency, the latter recognised in the calibre of co-producers who joined her on the release – Bok Bok (Kelela, Night Slugs), Rodiah McDonald (The XX, Sampha), Sega Bodega (Crazylegs) and new Paris engineer Krampf.

The Rite of May is out on Nuxxe Recordings, a label co-owned and run by fellow French artist Coucou Chloé, and frequent collaborator, Shygirl and Bodega. WHAT WE’RE ABOUT

Indie30 is a globally focused independent music blog run by a very small band of music tragic's from Adelaide in Australia. We believe passionately in posting about and promoting new independent music from a diverse range of genres and styles.

While many have retreated from using the term indie, it's proudly been our primary name from the beginning. Contrary to how it is often used, the term does not describe a particular music genre or style. Indie is simply short for independent label.

Used correctly, it describes music created and released independently of the three big music labels owned by multi-national entertainment conglomerates, Universal Music Group (Vivendi Corporation - France), Warner Music (Access Industries - Russia) and Sony Music (Sony Corporation - Japan) along with the 500+ subsidiaries and sub-labels they have between them.

As Indie30 exists solely to promote music and culture independent of the narrow confines and constraints of mainstream belief and corporate practice, we do not feature or promote any music by artists signed to these entities.

Given their underground roots and their constant refusal to yield to corporate greed, Techno and House for example are genres more indie than the pop, rock and folk genres that are mistakenly and often disingenuously mis-labelled as such.

As 4AD, Sub Pop and Matador are “indies” so are Warp, R&S and Ostgut Ton.

To ensure complete freedom and transparency in what is promoted on Indie30, we do not accept any payment or favours for content. The blog has always been and will remain a labour of love, a voluntary entity that is completely non-financial in status. All of us associated with this site have full time jobs unrelated to music.

Whether creating it or experiencing it, independent music and culture is in and of itself a political act. We are unashamedly progressive in all spheres of life and will never compromise our commitment to defend freedom of expression, speak truth to money and power, celebrate diversity in all its forms, fight for equality of opportunity for all and respect our place with the planet not above it.

Advance promos of singles, EP's or albums are especially welcome and alerts of new videos too. Indie30 does not engage in musical criticism. Quite simply, if we like what we hear and we can, we'll promote it. If we don't, we won't.

We strongly encourage readers to support the independent artists they like featured here and purchase (not just stream) their music and merchandise. The cultural worth of any society is measured by how it values and supports its art - and independent artists have always given society far more than they'll ever receive.
