Courtney Barnett has released the subtle yet soaring second single ‘Need A Little Time’ from her forthcoming album Tell Me How You Really Feel. It has a very different feel and focus from the withering yet empathetic ‘Nameless Faceless’ and rests on both Barnett’s unique phrasing ability and self effacing yet deeply moving vocals. Musically, it also displays her uncanny tendency to create and build layers of meaning and emotion from seemingly, the most innocuous of places; a slight chord change, a quick lift or drop in tone and volume, the subtle use of distortion. The effortless way she presents work obviously written and produced with meticulous and painstaking attention to detail has always been one of Barnett’s great strengths. And with ‘Need A Little Time’ has arguably never done it better.

The new single is accompanied by a nicely done video directed by Danny Cohen that uses the region of space as metaphor for the time and distance Barnett is seeking from herself and others. Tell Me How You Really Feel is out through Milk Records & Remote Control in Australia and Mom+ Pop and Marathon Artists internationally on May 18. Pre-order here.
