“Set against a psychedelic and exhausted L.A. backdrop, I find myself deep inside a cliche.”
Cody Critcheloe, the multi-faceted artist behind the long standing left field pop project Ssion is set to release his new album O next month, his first in seven years. So far he’s shared two singles and their videos and now a remix. The first taste of the album appeared in the form of the he seven minute pop opus ‘Comeback’ released very late last year. The second came last month when he he unveiled his dream funk number with Ariel Pink, ‘At Least The Sky Is Blue’. Last week that track got some straight beat remix treatment from Johnny Jewel to coincide with release of O’s album art and tracklist.
Critcheloe is well renowned for making excellent music videos for a wide range of artists and the two done for his own aforementioned singles are no exception. The first few minutes of the video for ‘At Least The Sky Is Blue’ sees him living inside a L.A. cliche until things get wonderfully weird. During the clip he not only keeps running into Pink playing the ghost of Elizabeth Taylor but after taking a raft of substances dresses as a Liza Minelli impersonator. He joins Pink/Taylor on stage and they belt out an outro that takes its direct cues from Jewel’s Neil Young rework for Chromatics, ‘Into The Black’. Visually, the end then recalls the final moments of Pink’s video for ‘Another Weekend’. as tragedy strikes.
O, containing no less than eleven contributing artists, is out May 11 on Dero Arcade. Pre-order a digital copy here complete with a stream of the ballad that opens the record ‘As Big As I Can Dream’. Both singles are streaming below accompanied by their videos. Jewel’s remix is the meat in the sandwich.
