This is the first in our new NYP Exhibits Series. Adelaide DJ/Producer Shannon Dickson offered to scour the beautiful obscure depths of Bandcamp*, the best place to buy online music, and select what he thinks are the best new electronic releases going around for a Name Your Price (NYP) arrangement.
New Canadian house label Recovery Mode have put down some amazing tunes to get you moving already. The third release by the fledgling Calgary based imprint is some house goodness in the form of the ‘NOTHING EP’ by DJ Nothing. It was a bit of a job finding out who this particular incarnation of DJ Nothing is given there are/was two in the US and one in Croatia. This EP is from the Canadian producer, but to throw you even more is actually a duo made up of Mark Adam and Dane Hanson (Danger Bay). Suitably mastered at Ten Speed Audio, the kick drums for the first track ‘Acid’ start the journey ahead & you know you’re in for a treat. An uplifting rising synth blends well with the heavy acid influenced bass line & is further enhanced by some beautiful female vocal samples that form together to fuel the drive of a song that instinctively makes you want to dance. ‘Heat’ follows & further confirms why this EP should be in your collection. Setting off nice & mellow, it builds with hypnotic hi-hats & claps that pair with solid kicks & an upbeat bass line which create a groove that continues to give throughout the entire track. Now if a lo-fi house & techno track had offspring, one of their children would be ‘Material Business’. Beginning with heavy but warm kick drums & a dreamy synth, it pushes on with the addition of some quirky samples & pitch changing hats that all help contribute to a magnificent ending of this impressive 3 track release.
