Last week, in one Australian location, namely Melbourne, Real Love were asking themselves when would be a good time to share their new video for ”Sucker’, the first track they ever put out into the world while at the same time in another, namely Adelaide we at Indie30 were asking ourselves if we would make Real Love’s excellent debut album ‘Birds’ one of four we were pondering over, our Album of the Week. And then on Tuesday the stars aligned. Completely unbeknownst to us Real Love released their video and completely unbeknownst to them Birds belatedly became Indie30’s album of the week just seven weeks after it was released. And yesterday we were both the wiser of the results of those thoughts. Uncanny eh?
Spaciously aquatic in feel and angular and spiky in tone, ‘Sucker’ was originally released as the band’s first ever single in June last year. Its video now means that along with ‘You Can’, which we caught here and ‘Memories’ which we didn’t but you can here, all three singles from Birds now have impressive self directed 8mm visuals that fit hand in glove with the band’s independent aesthetic and self-effacing yet wryly pointed sense of humour. In ‘Sucker’ we see the band enjoying what seems to be a colourfully inane night out struggling to buy up a stack of instant gratification at the local suburban shopping centre and being darn well grateful for it too.
Real Love’s Birds is self released and our Album of the Week for a bloody good reason. Find out what that is by grabbing yourself a copy digitally here.
