This week saw Berlin based Swedish DJ/Producer Sanna Engdahl aka La Fleur release Outbreaker, the follow up EP to the excellent Exhaust from earlier this year, the title track of which we just devoured. The three tracker sports two very different originals either side of a remix and is a darker and slightly less dense affair. It’s another assured work that fuses potent deftly applied house melodies with disciplined percussion rich techno rhythms.
It begins with the deep and trippy ‘Devil Sigh’, a spacious work of disciplined minimalism where the adage less is more certainly holds true. The hypnotic effect created by the tonal beat and the slightly blurred synth feels as if its capable of stealing your mind. Mixing percussive flamboyance with melodic introspection is one of La Fleur’s trademarks and the title track does not disappoint. ‘Outbreaker’s’ exquisite pace and deepest of bass lines allow La Fleur to bring her masterful use of organic percussion to the fore merging the results with the controlled drift of expertly manipulated synth melodies and a recurring reverse guitar motif. In between the originals, ‘Devil Sigh’ gets an intensive analog driven Chicago House makeover from Gerd Janson’s and Phillip Lauer’s Tuff City Kids.
Outbreaker is La Fleur’s 12th EP and fifth release for Watergate Records, the imprint of the Kreuzberg club where she is resident. Listen to ‘Outbreaker’ and the remix of ‘Devil Sigh’ below. Get your copy on wax from the label here.
