A couple of weeks back Xi’an dream pop/shoegaze outfit Endless White released their tellingly titled gem of a debut album Flow West To You. The Shaanxi quartet consist of vocalist/guitarist Zhang Wanyi and lead guitarist Ren Yuxuan ably backed by the sinewy bass lines of Li Yifan and the languidly inventive drums from Chen Xujan. The melodic guitar interplay between Zhang and Ren and the ambition and plasticity of Li and Chen along with Zhang’s subtle vocal emotion are elements that come together in diverse ways across the record’s ten tangential offerings. The three singles they shared in the album’s lead-in period clearly illustrate the latter point.
The first, the rhythmic and reverb laden ode to personal independence, “Song To Crush/ 告白的歌” is a track that more than lives up to its name once it hits its final quarter as harsh fuzz meets chiming reverb to create a cacophonous finish. The second is the album’s romantically tinged closer “Hit By Me 你被我浪漫”, a song of two halves and begins in stilted fashion full of lush tones before opening up to almost sound tropically inspired for a brief moment with its plucky guitar and breezy vocals. The hushed and hopeful disposition across its latter section is marked by Zhang’s velvety nostalgic vocals and Chen’s delayed snare work. The current single is the wistful slow burner “A Lost Dog Story 元宝”, its comforting dream like state enhanced by Zhang’s gorgeous vocal notation.
