Italian electronic duo Underspreche released their diverse new EP Lumina Cali to digital services today with a vinyl release to follow early next month. The three tracker sports three very different chameleon like creations, each taking its turn to perform unlikely twists through the worlds of techno, house and electro and sharing the same determination in intention to break the usual straight lines around those three genres. All three boast more of a harder techno infused bent than their previous releases but all retain a penchant for utilising house styles and world music sounds and signatures. Having said that however, those familiar with the modus operandi of the Cavallino (Lecce) duo won’t be surprised in the least at the direction or the ambition nor with the quality.
The title track begins in dark and pensive fashion before opening up briefly to reveal its celestial side. Its second half is peppered with slight echoes of atmospherics, frequency laden effects and interventions of fat acid sounds. ‘Onde Riflesse, with its playful group vocal sample and off beat hi-hat work driving the percussive groove forward interchanges and combines both a heartfelt and sentimental deep house melody with powerful, no nonsense arpeggio. The final track ‘Under The Black Lines’ starts in determined fashion, the beat quickly established with an array of drum sounds and a groove that benefits from another set of ideas based around inventive percussion and muscular bass synth. The insertion of the sounds of the Middle East make for a great contrast with its rather relentless nature.
