Los Angeles singer-songwriter Chris Cohen is set to deliver his third album later next month and has just shared its third single, ‘Sweet William’, a catchy mixture of soft retro rock and bittersweet psych-pop. Cohen’s idiosyncratically relaxed vocal style fits perfectly with both tendencies and that gives rise to the track’s seemingly effortless nature. But don’t be fooled, smart and thoughtful yet self-effacing and understated songwriting like this does not come easy or often. The gorgeous lo-fi sheen and the ever present dissonance is complemented by the unusual twists and turns in melody and rhythm. While they can appear quite slight in nature on the track’s meditative surface, every direction taken is quietly thrilling in both complexity and unpredictability. The liltingly effective bass lines and the guitar solo are killer too.

‘Sweet William’ is accompanied by a new video directed by the track’s lyricist Luke Csehak (The Lentils) and captures the tracks psychedelic subject matter perfectly. If you missed it, the equally excellent second single, ‘Green Eyes’ with its video is below too. Chris Cohen is out March 29 on Captured Tracks. Pre-order here.

*You can also find the new single in our New Independent Pop/Rock playlist on Spotify here while the first two singles can be found in the 2019 Pop/Rock equivalent where ever track added during the year can be found
