Back in late January we featured ‘Lips‘ from Italian electronic folk artist GINEVRA in our Folk/Country Singer-Songwriter/Chamber Pop playlist on Spotify. Fragile yet determined, it was the second single to feature from then forthcoming dreamy debut EP Ruins which finally surfaced in full last Friday. That and the hauntingly surreal debut single, ‘Forest‘ from the Turin born and Milanese based artist were suggestive of a musician and songwriter who can bring a decent measure of dexterity and diversity to the table, both as a storyteller but also in structure and musical form. And we’re happy to say the remainder of the five track Ruins more than lives up to that promise.
Delivered in narrative form, the production work of Francesco Fugazza adds a particular depth to Ruins as it moves from a disposition of melancholy to a hope filled tenor. The themes here are love, loss, realisation, awakening and recovery and opener ‘Tender‘ may be brief in length but its lush textures and sudden end only serves highlight the feeling and its intent given the internal journey of struggle to come. The cathartic ‘Serralves‘ is the EP highlight for us, bringing an acceptance and a pop dynamic to proceedings while closer ‘Sleep‘ echoes with a defiance that is delicately layered musically despite combing over a crushing loss lyrically. And those two tracks serve as the two recovery points to the emotional wilderness Ginevra is navigating through on both ‘Forest’ and ‘Lips’.
The touching Ruins is out now through the fine Factory Flaws, home to fellow Italian artists HÅN and GIUNGLA, who have also featured on Indie30 over the journey.
