NEW & NOTABLE: KOKOROKO (ENG) – KOKOROKO EP

London eight piece Afrobeat, soul and jazz inspired outfit KOKOROKO led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, released their debut self titled EP a couple of weeks back through globally inclusive label Brownswood Recordings, Influenced by but by no means limited to the music of West Africa and the politics of resistance, it sports the whirlwind, catch your breath, guitar and horn of the circular Ethiopian jazz inspired ‘Adwa’ which you can stream below. While the sparklingly compact yet powerful feminist ode ‘Uman’, which they shared back in January is there too, the EP also includes the plaintively circumspect folk stylings of ‘Ti-da’ and the subtle rhythms and lasting glow of ‘Abusey Junction’, a track originally featured on the Brownswood compilation We Out Here from 2018 and one which has gained over 23 million plays on Youtube. KOKOROKO is available now on all formats (the vinyl is sold out but you can pre-order the second pressing due in mid April) and can be purchased/pre-ordered here.
