London artist Arlo Parks today released her debut EP Super Sad Generation, a musically rich, diverse and socially aware sonic document of self discovery that is suggestive the music world has an emerging talent of lasting significance on its hands. Three of its four tracks surfaced over the past few months and each were indicative of the fact that the super smart Parks has little time for the shallow superciliousness of the corporate led neoliberal system nor for narrow traditional societal tropes that continue to manipulate and entrap women and limit their choices.

Opener ‘Cola’, delivered in ultra smooth fashion, is a lesson to self in letting go of love that’s never going to fly. This was followed up by the title track, a laments the emptiness of life felt by a generation individually sheltered by a perversely shallow and selfish form of paternalism but collectively shafted by a system that has neglected long term thinking, the public good and discouraged ethical and intellectual thinking. The last single to be released ‘Romantic Garbage’ is a self-critique on her myopic idea of romance as a sixteen year old while the fourth track ‘I Like’ is a clever take on self image, neediness and trying to impress.
