Chicago art pop/math rock outfit Spirits Having Fun have followed up their excellent debut single, Electricity Explorer’ with the similarly idea rich, compositionally complex and genre dense ‘Auto-Portrait’, the title track from their forthcoming debut album. Spiky as it is punchy and chaotic as it is composed, there’s definitely a hint of the legendary outfit Deerhoof about. But unlike the San Francisco veterans, who weren’t averse to having their creations teeter on the edge of a cliff, you never get the sense Spirits Having Fun will let proceedings in real terms get anywhere near that point.
There are no less than five distinct styles and genres in the track’s first minute alone culminating in a chaotic chorus of comforting inventory delivered by with unashamed delight vocalist/guitarist Katie McShane. It references the theme of identity, recalling special people, places and objects and finding comfort from them. That could be seen as representative of its cyclical feel and a full sound, realised despite the multitude of lines and angles, entrances and exits present. It gives the track a determined weight, power and a sense of cohesion amid the tumult.
