Over the weekend, we added ‘New Year’, the new single from Melbourne pop/rock trio Swim Team to our New Pop/Rock Playlist on Spotify. Today they released a video for it as part of the lead in to the release their debut album Home Time next month. Musically and lyrically tinged with a certain sombreness, at the same time it carries a reflective tone, one that looks forward rather than back in the hope there will be happier times ahead.
The faded visuals match the jaded fragility and open honesty that accompany Home Time’s themes. Conceived over a writing period that extended to two years, the album extrapolates on the oscillating impacts of relationships and explores personal experiences with love, death, exhilaration and grief through a lens that’s one half melancholy and dead serious, one half irreverent and self-deprecating.
‘New Year’ is the third single to appear from Home Time and follows on from the ramshackle slow builder ‘Everyday Things’ and the jangling uncertainty of ‘Are You Into Me’. Listen to and watch the video for ‘New Year’ below and pre-order the album out July 12 through Hysterical Records here.
