Russian Techno DJ/Producer Nina Kraviz has released a new superbly left field three tracker странно странно необъятно / Stranno Stranno Neobjatno / Strange Strange Immensely on her own label трип (Trip). It’s another fuck you to anyone who thinks that the popularity she’s gained is going to compromise her art or music into sounding safe and predictable. Because this EP is anything fucking but.
The chameleonic saunter of ‘Dream Machine’ sports a a minimally exact disposition, its hats and beat work a wondrous rhythm. They form the basis for delicate vocals to mix in with a coterie of twisted classical/industrial/noise and jazz like motifs. The idea almost sounds abhorrently unworkable but in Kraviz’s skilled compositional and technical hands, it becomes an enticing work of the highest calibre. The relentless yet restrained ‘I Want You’ sits pretty at 135bpm and is another instructively minimalist highlight as hypnotic vocals and a bright swathe of synth shoots across its bow. The unwavering and dark ‘Stranno Neobjatno’ gives no quarter with its cracking pace and inexorable bass groove. Kraviz vocals breathe the track’s title constantly but unobtrusively as a myriad of anomalous effects form to paint strangely decorative sonic canvas.
It is to her undeniable credit that Kraviz’s aforementioned popularity has come purely from her own ingenuity and completely on her own terms. And those terms rest exclusively on the energy and integrity she brings to the techno table, qualities that are witnessed through boundary pushing creations like this.
