One of the better debut EP’s in techno released during November came in the form of Gevurah, the debut proper from Azeri DJ/Producer George Effe. Released two weeks back through the label belonging to Baku club iN, it’s his first stand alone release and follows the split Dirty Mind EP with countryman Irshad Hussein and singular contribution to the inaugural iN compilation. Gevurah, meaning discipline and strength in Jewish religiosity contains three fully functional and powerfully cerebral cuts plus a sturdy remix from Lisbon’s Temudo who also mixed the record.
The EP begins with the slow rippling insistence of ‘iN’, an at once delicately spacious and brazenly tight track which pays homage to the aforementioned club/label which its is named for. That juxtaposition continues on the meticulously composed and delivered title track where elementally rhythm and space hold sway on a variable plane and use of compression and reverb is key. On the remix, Temudo ramps up the volume and power considerably employing a pummelling patterned beat and end of days like atmospherics. The constant dynamic that’s present in closing track ‘Chesed’ acts as a counterweight, providing a balance of sorts to the title track and its remix*.
Gevurah was released last week to wider digital and streaming platforms and is available to buy on iN Records here.
