Released late last month, Tollarp Transmissions is the debut album by Swedish electronic artist Johanna Knutsson. Rich in experimentation, it’s a musical collage that’s representative of memories from her childhood home in Sweden, a vivid recollection of time and a fascinating and fitting tribute to place. Despite its compositional complexity, variant timbres, diffuse tonality and specific local reference points, Knutsson manages to instantly convey and maintain a universal connection with the listener. In fact, because of these labyrinth like intricacies she is able to both readily evoke the awestruck curiosity of wide eyed innocence and embody the apprehension felt by a child in her miniature world surrounded by the disproportionate and perplexing enormity of the world around them.
